Concept Art

Juan Gris

Juan Gris was Spanish born sculptor and painter who worked with cubism whilst living and working in France. Gris's work is painted in the style of cubism with bright colours and often illustrated objects which can be considered relatively small and could fit on a table or are people and from my research has never illustrated a landscape or any architectural scenes. The objects or aspects in which he conveys are rarely whole or can be seen fully due to them often being cut up or split into key aspects. often the objects he is illustrating are made up of abstract shapes and consist of very little detail but are still clear enough for the audience to be able to tell what he is showcasing in his work. His style is one in which I have tried to reproduce using my own work.

This is the work of his I used as a reference for my own work which was based around architecture.

David Hockney

David Hockney is a British born artist who works in multiple different fields, techniques and processes such as painting, photography, printing and others and is a stage designer, draftsman. Some of his most famous works are collages as shown in the image above, these collages are made up of multiple images often photographs of one scene or object from varying angles and each image captures only a small aspect and on it's own would not convey the full scene but then it is in a collage with multiple other images of the same scene or aspect it combines with the other images which are layered on top of each other in varying angles and when all of the rectangular images are combined it fully creates the scene or object in an interesting and artistic style. this style is a mixture of montage and cubism and works very well and is at a professional standard. Hockney's technique is a style that I would like to try and experiment with and can be achieved but not with as much professionalism as his.

To create a background for a concept art I started with the background. To make the background I began by analyzing and illustrating architecture which would become the base for later development. I took ten or more photographs of buildings and other pieces of architecture and illustrated at least one A3 double page spread of pen and graphite drawn illustrations. These were simple and lacking of much skill but were good enough for the tasks ahead. To improve my drawings I would add much more detail and introduce accurate shading, and to improve my photographs I would experiment more with interesting angles and take photos of architecture from other places other than college so that there is more variety.

From the drawing I completed I photocopied them multiple times and enlarged certain areas and with these photocopies I used multiple different techniques to add to the drawings

Lyonel Feininger

Lyonel Feininger was a German-American artist who worked often in the confines of cubism, and was one of the leading artists in expressionism. He worked as an illustrator mostly he illustrated buildings in the cubism style which is similar to what I am doing at the moment. I like his techniques and methods to create the buildings he is trying to convey and would try to try a method at least similar to his in my own work during this project. I like how abstract his work looks and that style suits buildings which is what he focuses upon during his work, another aspect of his work which I like is the use of colours which are bright enough to make his work more appealing and interesting and yet not look childish or unrealistic.

Monoprints

During my experimenting in different ways in which to illustrate buildings in differnt medias, one of the techniques in which I used was monoprinting. This is a process where you have a glass plate covered ink or a way of applying colour, then getting a piece of paper or similar material in which to print onto and a reference image in this case one of a building. Then by applying pressure along the lines of the building as to illustrate the building using only lines. Here are a selection of my results my results.

Evaluation

Now that I have completed this project I can over look the work that I have done and review my working practises, evaluate the good the work that need improving and what I have learnt. My early work in the project such as the initial building sketches were not a showcase of how good I am at drawing but were still passable and I would improve upon them by adding more detail to them and making more of them and of different varying buildings and of people. My photographs were only of a few select buildings which was bad and I would of liked to improve upon that by looking at different types of building so that I would have a wider spectrum of research to get ideas from. I did however experiment a lot with angles and view pointssuch as; low angle, medium shot, establishing shot, flat angle and side view. I looked at the lines that make a building and tried to find interesting ways in which to showcase the buildings in different ways. The A2 work which I was tasked with creating a landscape of buildings of varying size and design. I experimented a lot within my work in regard to materials and techniques to get layering and textere, I think I showed that I can give a concept art a certain texture through studio techniques which is a part of concept art since the material in which a building or anything else is important and need to be reflected in the work. This work was passable yet my time management skills need to be improved since I barely had enough time to finish and had to do an evaluate of the work later.Through out this project I belive I have experimented enough and that my experiments are stuck into my sketchbook and annotated and evaluated to an exceptable standard. My research into the artist who designed landscapes was extensive enough and related to my work and had images as evidence. All of my reasearch was extensive enough and met the pass requirements and shows that I understood the key aspects of concept art, I also included images as evidence that related to my research and were of a good quality, yet I could improve them by related the hole work through out and not make them seem like seperate work. I did throught different parts of my work prove that I understand the purpose of concept art and as I did have proffessional grade work along side as evidence which was part of the assesment criteria and without it I wouldn't get a pass. I also explained the process of the development of concept with examples of professional concept art work which futher proves my understanding and knowledge in regard to concept art and how it is achieved. This work was not hugely nessesary but futher the evidence that I have done research and will help with getting a higher grade. To improve upon my work I would of done my own examples of each stage of how the work develops. I have proved with multiple different drawings that I have done by hand without any assistance that I an caple at drawing human figures and I have evaluated my work as with examples of the work I have recreated. My work is showing that I have talent in drawing yet to improve it I would add colour. A problem in which I had through out was time management and due to this a lot of my work was some what rushed and if I had spent more time working on the work I could of improved then. Overal my work should get a pass since as far as I can tell I have met all the pass criteria which is on the brief.
