Black letter type is a serif typeface, this is due to the serif tails and feet coming off of the edges of the lettering which differs from Sans Serif.
This typography has been dated to go as far back as 1150, and has been continued to be used for German language until the 20th century.
Blackletter is a Gothic typeface and can be hard to read but does show case a gothic style and can be very useful for establishing a certain style.
